Mega Millions Prizes and Odds

Unlike Powerball the Mega Millions lottery matrix changed only once - it went from a 5/52 + 1/52 game to a 5/56 + 1/46 game on June 21, 2005. The prize structure changed only slightly. The 5-of-5 prizes grew from $175,000 to the current $250,000; the 4-of-5 + MB prizes doubled from $5,000 to $10,000; the rest of the prizes remained the same. Moreover, starting Sept. 14, 2010, a Mega Millions ticket with the Megaplier option that qualified for a second-tier prize by matching the first five winning numbers, but not the Mega Ball number are paid $1 million, regardless of the Megaplier number drawn. Previously, all match-five Megaplier prizes won $500,000, $750,000 or $1 million, depending on that drawing’s Megaplier number.

Note also that unlike Powerball, Mega Millions draws a multiplier (2, 3, or 4) at each draw, called a Megaplier, which multiplies all lower prizes (not the jackpot). In Powerball, there is no multiplier, just only a PowerPlay option that increases all lower prizes by a pre-determined fixed amount. Both Megaplier of Mega Millions and PowerPlay of Powerball cost an additional $1 per line.

The most frequently drawn Megaplier number is 4 since the multiplier balls are drawn from a lot consisting of 12 balls of 4, 7 balls of 3, and 2 balls of 2.
